Named after Lady Smith, 1782-1873, wife of Sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape Colony from 1847-1852. She is said to have brought this species from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town, where it was successfully cultivated. 

A bulbous geophyte that grows up to 30 cm, bulb mostly submerged.
