HOMAGE TO A DICEASED Cape chat (Cercomela familiaris)

I found a poor dead bird in my store room, perfectly dried out, underneath a box, in December 2023, Baviaanskloof, and promptly decided to give it a proper burial.

Set inside a recycled glass light cover in transparent crystal resin, this bird gets to spend eternity nestled amongst the rocks it grew up in, Coral tree seeds (Erythrina caffra), a hornet’s nest, a shot bullet’s molten metal, a Tilapia’s mandible, a meerkat’s mandible and a piece of junk metal from our yard.
